Evaluation, diagnosis and treatment
The patient's sleep and medical history are reviewed in detail by the evaluating physician during the initial office visit. If necessary, a diagnostic overnight sleep study (nocturnal polysomnogram) is then scheduled. This is a multi-parameter, non-invasive and painless test.
In certain cases, a Multiple Sleep Latency Test is performed the day following the overnight study to objectively measure the severity of daytime sleepiness. The study findings and treatment options are discussed with the patient, and a detailed report is provided to the referring physician.
Treatment effectiveness is assessed in follow-up sessions. Consultations with specialists in other UMMC medical departments may be arranged if necessary.
Only a few ENT surgeons in the country are fellowship trained in sleep medicine, and UMMC Sleep Medicine is home to one of the few physicians with training in both upper airway surgery and sleep medicine. Our multidisciplinary team consisting of ENT, plastic surgery and sleep physicians is working hard to treat neonate and infants with airway disorders/genetic abnormality including micrognathia. Thus, our specialized physician works to customize a treatment plan for each patient's unique needs.
